Cultural Horizons of Shantiniketan

Shantiniketan

This 3 min short video explores the landscapes, angles, parallel lines and framing of a particular place in Shantiniketan. The frames, movement, and sound combine to compose an interactive visual which slowly unfolds people singing at a distance.

Here, the landscape plays an important role because it is not just a backdrop. Deleuze conceptualized landscapes not as static backdrops but as dynamic assemblages of flows, intensities, and interactions. Landscapes exist as "territories" that are constantly shaped and reshaped by forces within and beyond them.

Angles represent shifts in perspective or points of view. Lines in Deleuze's thought represent flows, trajectories, and processes of deterritorialization and becoming . Angles symbolize shifts in perspective, turning points, or intersections in the multiplicity of flows. Similarly here, the angles created by the trees shown in the beginning, the parallel lines created by the trees represent flows and symbolize shifts in perspective.

The ‘ frame within frame’ at the end shows the group of people and Bauls singing  in between the famous trees of Shantiniketan.

The movement of the camera slowly focuses on the music source. The video also shows the saturation of the tourists. Different Activities have been shown in a single frame, people walking, taking pictures, laughing etc.

The Deleuze Theories, whether involving landscapes, lines, angles, saturation, rarefaction, decomposition, or composition—share a fundamental coherence rooted in his broader worldview. This video is a humble effort to portray all these theories.
